When I learned that Witch comes from wicce, a 5,500 year old word that meant a wise woman, a shaman, a seer of the Sacred, I came out of the broom closet. Forty years ago, that made me one of America’s first public Witches. Despite the challenges, especially to my career as a lawyer, I’ve joyfully spent my life making the impossible possible—helping Witchcraft become the fastest growing spirituality in America.

My tradition, the Temple of Ara, was the first to focus on Witchcraft as an indigenous, shamanic wisdom tradition. After becoming a Wiccan High Priestess and casting spells for love and success—which worked more often than not—my practice widened into realms of spirits and deepened into the divinity embodied by Mother Earth. I sought Witch’s wisdom, stripping away the remnants of patriarchal and mechanical “magic” with its efforts to control Nature.

I cultivated simple, accessible practices to reconnect— whether you’re a Witch or not—to the divinity of Creation and to the lost, natural and sacred parts of ourselves. And that is where real magic comes from.
